Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministers are laypeople—Christian men and women—trained to provide one-to-one care to people experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, relocation, or separation due to military deployment.

Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life. Their commonality? A passion for bringing Christ’s love care to people during a time of need. The relationship between a care receiver and a Stephen Minister is confidential.  Men are matched with men; women with women. People who are hurting have a compassionate companion—a caring Christian friend who provides emotional and spiritual support.

When a care receiver’s needs exceed what a Stephen Minister can provide, the Stephen Ministry team can make a referral to an appropriate professional or other community resource.

Trinity Lutheran Church has partnered with Stephen Ministries in 2005. Since then, new Stephen Ministers are trained on a regular basis. We have four trained leaders who supervise the program.

A Stephen Minister begins a caring relationship when he or she is matched with a person experiencing a life crisis. The Stephen Minister then meets with that person on a weekly basis to listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support. Confidentiality is the key to the success of this program.  The caring relationship lasts as long as the person needs care. This relationship often results in a continuing friendship.

Our Stephen Ministers receive 50 hours training which teaches principles and skills that equip them to provide high-quality, Christ-centered emotional and spiritual care to others. They gain insight into the thoughts, feelings, and actions of people who are hurting. They develop relational and caring skills they can apply to all aspects of their life. They deepen their faith as the Holy Spirit fashions them into Christ-centered caregivers. They feel a special bond with those in their class—experiencing real Christian community. Stephen Minister training is a lot of fun!
